The Problem of Induction

The problem of induction, formulated by David Hume in A Treatise of Human Nature (1739) and the Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding (1748), challenges the justification of inferences from past experience to unobserved cases. We expect the sun to rise tomorrow because it always has, but that inference assumes that the future resembles the past — an assumption that itself is supported only by past experience, which makes the justification circular. Hume concluded that induction cannot be rationally justified and that it rests on custom or habit.

The problem matters because science depends on induction at every level: every law of nature generalizes from observed cases to unobserved ones, and every repeated experiment assumes that results will reproduce. If induction has no rational grounding, the empirical sciences appear to stand on an unjustified foundation.

The history of responses is one of the richest in philosophy. Kant argued for synthetic a priori principles that guarantee the uniformity of nature. Popper proposed that science does not need induction at all: it proceeds by conjectures and falsification, and corroboration is not probabilistic support. Reichenbach offered a pragmatic defense — if induction can work at all, it will work. And in the probabilistic tradition, induction is modeled as Bayesian updating, in which Bayes' theorem gives the rational way to revise beliefs as evidence accumulates. Each response has attracted serious objections.

The problem is not that induction fails in practice — it obviously works — but that its justification remains elusive. It stays a live topic in epistemology and the philosophy of science, intertwined with the analysis of explanation, laws of nature, and the standards of evidence that distinguish science from pseudo-science.
