The Industrial Revolution was the transformation, beginning in Britain in the late 18th century, of production from handwork and muscle power to machinery and inanimate energy. It is usually divided into a first phase (roughly 1760–1830, coal, iron, steam, textiles) and a second phase (roughly 1870–1914, steel, electricity, chemicals, the internal combustion engine). Its significance rivals that of the agricultural revolution: it changed how humans produce, work, live, and organize, and its effects continue to reshape the world.

The classic narrative centers on Britain's advantages: abundant coal and iron, a commercial economy with secure property rights, a large labor supply, overseas markets and empire, and a culture of practical innovation. The key inventions were incremental and interdependent — the spinning jenny, the water frame, and the power loom mechanized textiles; James Watt's improved steam engine (patented 1769, refined 1770s–1780s) provided stationary and then mobile power; and the coke-smelting of iron lowered its cost dramatically. The factory system concentrated machines, workers, and energy under one roof, replacing the putting-out system of domestic production.

The social consequences were profound and double-edged. Production and population grew as never before; real wages eventually rose, and the long run saw unprecedented material abundance. But the early decades brought long hours, child labor, dangerous conditions, urban crowding, and severe pollution in the new industrial cities. Workers responded with machine-breaking (Luddism), trade unions, and new political movements, while governments gradually legislated factory acts limiting hours and child employment. Railways (from the 1830s) created national markets and a new geography, and steamships and the telegraph bound the world together — the same communication revolution the printing press had begun centuries earlier.

Historians debate the revolution's causes and timing: whether it was a sharp break or the acceleration of long-run growth, why Britain led, and how much its gains were bought at the expense of colonial labor and resources (the Atlantic economy, slavery, and Indian deindustrialization are central to modern accounts). The spread of industrialization — to continental Europe, the United States, Japan, and later the global South — was uneven and remains so. The second industrial revolution's technologies, from electricity grids to the assembly line, set the template for the mass-consumption societies of the 20th century, and the environmental costs of fossil-fuel growth, already visible in the 19th century, are now a central global problem.
