Coloring books are one of the most searched low-content categories on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), and also one of the most heavily reviewed. The mechanical steps are simple; passing Amazon's human quality review is where most submissions die.
The mechanical steps
- Create the interior PDF. Single-sided pages (bleed if art extends to the edge), 8.5" × 11" being the standard choice. Page count must match the final product exactly; blank filler pages count toward it.

- Set up the listing. Title, subtitle, description, seven keyword slots, two categories. The title should name the audience and occasion ("Ocean Animals Coloring Book for Kids Ages 4–8"), not the brand.
- Order a physical proof before making the book public. Screen previews do not show paper opacity — a real issue when line art bleeds through thin paper.

Amazon applies human review to low-content books precisely because the category is flooded. The documented failure modes:
- Duplicate or template-identical interiors across multiple titles.
- AI-generated art quality problems: broken line continuity, doubled strokes, artifacts that a human colorist cannot fill.
- Trademark terms in titles or keywords (character names, brand names).
- Misleading categories — a children's coloring book routed into an adult category, or vice versa.
What gets titles through
A coherent theme with original composition, line weight appropriate to the age range, and a listing whose keywords match what the book actually contains. Reviewers are checking whether a human cared. The book that passes is the one where the answer is visibly yes.
