The Deep Ocean
The largest habitat on Earth begins below 200 meters: permanent darkness, crushing pressure, food scarcity, and the strange adaptations that make life there possible.

Below 200 meters — the depth where sunlight becomes too faint for photosynthesis — the ocean turns into the largest habitat on Earth: permanent darkness, near-freezing temperatures (1–4 °C), and pressure rising by one atmosphere every 10 meters. At the average ocean depth of about 3,700 meters, any air-filled cavity would be crushed; animals there are mostly gelatinous precisely because solids resist compression poorly.
The food problem
Nothing grows in the dark, so the deep sea eats what falls from above: "marine snow" of dead plankton, fecal pellets, and the occasional whale fall. Food is scarce enough that scavengers arrive within hours at a fresh carcass; some fish evolved enormous jaws and distensible stomachs to accept rare large meals. Only about 1–3% of surface production reaches the abyssal floor, which sets the energy budget for everything down there (food webs and trophic levels explains the thinning of energy at each step).
Life without light
Deep-sea species converge on a toolkit: bioluminescence for lures, signaling, and camouflage (counterillumination matches the dim downwelling light); enormous eyes or none at all; slow metabolisms and long lifespans; gelatinous bodies that need no structure against water pressure. Chemosynthetic ecosystems at hydrothermal vents and cold seeps run on chemical bonds instead of sunlight — tube worms with no gut, hosted by sulfide-oxidizing bacteria.
What we actually know
More people have stood on the Moon than have reached Challenger Deep (about 10,935 m) — a handful of submersible pilots since 1960, most of them after 2019. Every survey finds new species; full-ocean-depth biodiversity remains fundamentally under-sampled, which is the honest state of a habitat covering most of the planet's surface.
