A honey bee colony is a single superorganism: one queen laying up to 2,000 eggs a day in summer, tens of thousands of worker females running every task from nursing to foraging, and a few hundred males whose only job is mating. Beekeeping — managing this superorganism in movable-frame hives — is less about honey than about pollination: managed bees underpin pollination of almonds, apples, berries, and melons worldwide.

The society

A colony's division of labor is age-based, not genetic: nurse bees feed larvae, young workers build comb and guard the entrance, and the oldest foragers fly out for nectar, pollen, water, and propolis. The queen's only job is laying (up to 2,000 eggs a day in season); workers decide everything else collectively, including replacing a failing queen by feeding larvae royal jelly to raise a successor. Foragers communicate flower locations with the waggle dance — decoding the angle relative to the sun and the duration proportional to distance, one of the few non-human symbolic communication systems that is well understood. The dance language earned Karl von Frisch a Nobel Prize in 1973.

What the hive makes

Honey is nectar dehydrated by evaporation and enzymatic conversion (invertase splitting sucrose into glucose and fructose) to below 18% water — fermentation-food-science explains why that concentration resists spoilage. Beeswax is secreted by young workers; propolis is collected plant resin. A healthy colony in a good location produces 20–60 kg of surplus honey a year while pollinating crops worth billions.

Colony collapse and varroa

Colony losses are driven less by a single cause than by the varroa mite (Varroa destructor), an ectoparasite vectoring deformed wing virus, plus pesticide exposure and habitat loss. Managed hive losses run 30–45% annually in temperate countries.
