Morphology is the branch of linguistics that studies the internal structure of words. Its basic unit is the morpheme, the smallest unit of meaning or grammatical function: the word cats consists of two morphemes — cat (a noun meaning the animal) and -s (the plural marker). Morphemes can be free (able to stand alone, like cat) or bound (must attach to another morpheme, like -s). Bound morphemes include prefixes (un-, re-), suffixes (-ness, -ed), and less commonly infixes and circumfixes.

Morphology distinguishes two ways of building words. Inflection creates different grammatical forms of the same word — walk, walks, walked, walking — without changing its core meaning or word class; it expresses tense, number, case, and agreement. Derivation creates new words, often changing the word class: teach (verb) → teacher (noun) via -er, happy (adjective) → happiness (noun) via -ness. Compounding combines free morphemes: toothbrush, greenhouse, firefighter. Languages differ sharply in how they use these devices: English relies on word order and a modest inflectional system, while agglutinative languages such as Turkish stack many suffixes onto a single stem, and polysynthetic languages can pack what English expresses as a whole sentence into one word.

Morphology interacts with the other components of grammar. It feeds syntax: inflected forms carry the features (tense, person, number) that sentences must agree on. It connects to semantics: derivational affixes systematically shift meaning, and lexical semantics studies how complex words relate to their parts. Even phonology is involved — adding a suffix can trigger sound changes, as in electric → electricity, where the stress shifts. The mental lexicon is organized morphologically: speakers recognize and produce novel compounds and derived words productively, and morphological priming experiments show that related forms (walk, walked) are stored and retrieved together.

Morphology also matters outside linguistics proper: word segmentation is a hard problem for natural language processing, spellcheckers and search engines must handle inflected forms, and language typologists use morphological type (isolating, agglutinative, fusional, polysynthetic) as a primary way of classifying the world's languages.
